Living in Phoenix, the first signs of Autumn are earlier sunsets and cooler evenings. Long before the chilly mornings and the blissful afternoons of late Fall and Winter, Phoenicians celebrate the return to the patio for evening entertainment.

To embrace this most anticipated time of year, I set out to make some centerpieces to welcome my favorite season. My patio table was bare and Fall lanterns were exactly what it needed! However, when was the last time you went to purchase a lantern? Am I the only one who slowly looks at the price through a single squinted eye to try and soften the cost of a lantern? And this isn’t reserved for a 36″ gold lantern with working door and blue diamond glass; no, even a 5″ lantern with no door or glass still seems super expensive. And then you have to double that cost because, let’s be honest, who only uses one lantern?!

My solution was to build my own lanterns and decorate them for the season. Using precut wood (helps keep all the measurements even), some spray paint, and items from the Dollar Store, I was able to bring the first look of Fall to my backyard space. I love the finished result, and since they were so affordable to make, I won’t be so angry when the inevitable stray ball from an aggressive game of soccer knocks them over! 😉
